Health Systems Strengthening

Enhancing Healthcare Services to Reach Vulnerable Communities

CMMB South Sudan is restoring healthcare systems to give women, children, and their communities lifesaving care.

Years of civil conflict have severely damaged the healthcare and social service systems in South Sudan. Health facilities face shortages of doctors, nurses and other health professionals, equipment, and medicines. With healthcare facilities overburdened and hard to access due to their distance from people’s homes, many people in South Sudan turn to local healers instead.

Since 2009, CMMB South Sudan has been working to improve the country’s health systems. In the country’s Western Equatoria State, we provide medical supplies, fund health facility infrastructure (including emergency transport), and train and mentor health staff. We work with communities to select, train, equip, deploy, and supervise community health workers who provide a critical link between communities and health facilities. In Nzara County, we support St. Theresa Hospital alongside other partners. This facility acts as a referral hospital, providing a higher level of specialist services, including surgery and ultrasounds, to enhance care for women, newborns, and young children. Together, we are developing stronger systems to respond to ongoing and urgent health needs.
