Why

Strengthen the healthcare services provided by St. Theresa Nzara Mission Hospital by expanding the facility’s infrastructure, training staff, and donating equipment.

What

South Sudan has one of the worst maternal mortality ratios in the world at 692 deaths per 100,000 live births. Disease spreads quickly, and malaria, pneumonia, TB, and HIV cause an alarming number of avoidable illnesses and deaths. Additionally, outbreaks such as yellow fever and measles are common.

St. Theresa Nzara Mission Hospital, with its suite of maternity and children’s wards, inpatient and outpatient departments, and infectious disease programs, is a source of hope in Nzara County. Since 2009, we have helped the hospital expand and improve its services—reaching more people and building confidence in the quality of care provided. We have expanded the hospital’s infrastructure, creating a surgical suite, maternity ward, neonatal care clinic, blood bank, solar power system, enhanced laboratory facilities, among other improvements. With better facilities available for patients, it’s easier to encourage women to attend antenatal care and deliver with a skilled birth attendant.

We also provide in-person mentoring and training to the hospital’s staff and affiliated community health workers, increasing their ability to provide high-quality pregnancy and newborn care. Healthcare workers gain confidence—and so do the patients they serve. To make sure the hospital has the critical supplies it needs, we donate medicines and equipment, including the machines and diagnostic supplies for a blood bank, and four-wheel drive ambulances to reach critically ill patients in remote areas.

Our work at St. Theresa Nzara Mission Hospital continues. By increasing access to quality obstetric, neonatal, and pediatric care, we will save more lives.
