Why

Prevent HIV and provide consistent treatment using health facility- and community-based strategies.

What

Since 2009, we have provided prevention, care, and treatment to thousands of people in South Sudan. A key focus of our work has been eliminating mother-to-child transmission—100% of pregnant women who receive antenatal services through CMMB South Sudan learn their HIV status and, if HIV positive, are started on treatment.

In 2024, we launched our new project, known as the South Sudan HIV/AIDS Reversal Project, or SSHARP. With funding from CDC and PEPFAR, SSHARP provides HIV services in 13 counties across Western Equatoria and Central Equatoria States.

The program prioritizes:

  • Engaging community members, testing, and making access to treatment easy and accessible.
  • Helping patients stay on their treatment through activities within both the communities and health facilities.
  • Spreading knowledge about the life-changing impact of achieving viral suppression—and strengthening our diagnostic capacity to monitor it among patients.
  • Developing community partnerships to enhance program impact even further
  • Continuous program improvement through quality monitoring and evaluation.

This program supports 39 health facilities. Our community-based services follow a unique model with a proven track record of success. We partner with churches and markets—even boda boda (motorcycle taxi) stops—giving people additional (and often, less intimidating) places to receive HIV testing and care services.
